Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered from 21?Forum Discussion for Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered from 21? 1234next ›last » Submitted by Ramona M. on Tue, 12/30/2008 - 16:25
In my country the legal age for drinking is 18, but I don't think that's good, because the majority of them drink because it's cool and because all the cool people do it. OK, at 18 you might have an idea regarding what's good for you and for your body, but you don't see it clearly, you're still making decisions based on what other people think about you.At 21 you might have a chance at life, because at this age you should be able to take better decisions for you. Its 18 where we live but there is clubs letting people in at 14 and 15 and they are drinking and being sick everywhere and leaving the toilets in a terrible state. I think drinking at 18 is ok but they should do more in clubs to make sure that nobody under 18 is getting in. Submitted by Erin C. on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 06:59
I think as long as you graduated or have your GED and your 18 you should be allowed to drink. Submitted by helen s. on Fri, 11/21/2008 - 00:26
Aa the age limit is 18 already in australia i personnally as mother wish that the age limit in australia would be 21. I dont think it will matter weather the age limit is 18 or 21 kids will still drink alcohol if the want, they will find some way of getting there hands on it. Drinking screws you up. i say no. Submitted by Bob C. on Thu, 11/13/2008 - 12:28
If a person is old enough to die for their country, then they are old enough to have a drink. Not all 18 year-olds are stupid and immature when it comes to drinking or driving. Also imagine a young couple engaged at 19 or 20, who in their right mind would seek to deprive them of champagne at an engagement party or at their wedding. Its ridiculous, luckily for me i live in Australia and will legally be allowed to drink in a few months. i hope others will come to their senses and help lower the drinking age in America. I Live in AUstralia where drinking age is already 18. Only recently we had 4 kids (yes at 18 you are still socially a kid) killed in an alcohol related driving incident. We have kids sleeping under bridges cause they're to drunk to get home (and they're not homeless). A good home will stop this you say?? No sorry it doesn't necessarily mean this. 18 is too young 21 is fine Submitted by Katie S. on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 19:27
i say it should be lowered one year... 20.... your not a kid anymore at 18... your an adult... youve had to years to get your life just barely started, and you should be able to have fun just a tad bit earlier.... be cautious tho... drinking is still dangerous...not that it will stop younger ppl from drinking b4 20 or so.... 21. here you can drive at 18 and well the kids who step in a car at 18...well lets just say make sure you wear a seat belt and have enough airbags Submitted by Natalie M. on Sun, 11/09/2008 - 03:57
Here in Australia you can drink, drive, marry ETC so i don't need to worry! Submitted by elizabeth l. on Sat, 11/08/2008 - 22:58
Instead of lowering the drinking age, we should raise the age to vote, serve in the military, be on a jury, etc. to the age of 21. An 18 year is STILL a child and should be given more time to mature before making such major and potentially fatal decisions about their lives. Submitted by ELSA C. on Sat, 11/08/2008 - 16:17
I AGREE IT SHOULD BE LOWERED OT NINETEEN, IF PEOPLE SHOULD DRIVE AT SIXTEEN. THAT IS A BIG RESPONSIBILITY. PEOPLE SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FO THEIR ACTIONS, PARENTS COULD BE PUNISHED IF AN INDIVIDUAL DOES NOT ACT PROPERLY. IT IS HYPOCRITICAL. LOOK AT CANADA. OTHER RULES SHOULD BE STICITER, LIKE JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. THEY SHOULD GO TO BOOT CAMP AND BE PUNSIEHD SEVERELY....PARENTS NEED TO ACT LIKE PARENTS, INSTEAD OF WORKING TOO MUCH HOURS. OR BEING SELFISH AND DOING SOCIAL EVENTS. IN OTHER COUNTRIES, FAMILY COMES FIRST. IN NORTH AMERICA IT IS MORE ABOUT HAVING THREE TV OR SPENDING MORE TIME WITH YOUR SPOUSE...WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? FAMILY SHOULD COME FIRST. Submitted by Amber C. on Sat, 11/08/2008 - 05:13
It should not be lowered. I think 21 is young to be drinking. 18 years old is just too young for people to be able to drink. Submitted by Danielle R. on Sat, 11/08/2008 - 04:22
Are u serious!!!!! Drinking kills off ur brain cells!!!!!! not only that but ur body kills off ur brain cells naturally when u turn twenty! grab a health book people!!!!!!! Submitted by Mirn S. on Sat, 11/08/2008 - 04:18
As a former teacher I have lost too many students to alcohol. One in particular comes to mind. I had known him since birth, attended church with him and taught him in second grade. When he got older he began to drink and eventually committed suicide He was sent to rehabs etc. So sad--it haunts me to this day and it has been over 10 years. Are you kidding me!! Most 18 year olds are still in Highschool. This is ludicrous. Absolutely not!!! Submitted by Katheirne R. on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 16:44
I think you should be 21. You are still a child at the age of 18 - just because you can vote at 18 does not mean anything. Drinking could kill a person Submitted by Kate C. on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 05:23
21 is better. From a person living and working in a country where the legal age is 18. At least at 21, most people have some sort of maturity, but at 18, its just kids being stupid. Submitted by Aubrey M. on Wed, 11/05/2008 - 05:14
that would not be a good idea to lower the drinking age Submitted by sandy v. on Tue, 11/04/2008 - 05:26
NO NO NO Lived in a place the drinking age was 17 and it was a blood bath. They raised the age to 18 and still a blood bath. It was still a blood bath at 21 but not as bad. Also, Lexy is right about brain cells. The only exception I would make is a soldier on a base or out of the country on a base. Be they female or male must drink on the base and not allowed to leave or drive. They fight for us and die for us so we can do something for them...ON THE BASE. Submitted by Lexy Rahne on Sat, 11/01/2008 - 16:15
NO IT SHOUDN'T!!!!! BECAUSE YOUR BRAIN CELLS AREN'T FULLY DEVELOPED UNTIL THE AGE OF 21 SO IF YOUR DRINKING UNDER THE AGE NOW THEN YOU JUST KILLED A LOT OF BRAIN CELLS AND YOUR BRAIN CELLS DON'T GROW BACK!!! SO DON'T BE STUPID!! DON'T VOTE TO LOWER THE DRINKING AGE AND DON'T DRINK!!!! Submitted by Stephanie H. on Thu, 10/30/2008 - 15:28
There is not enough control on underage drinking so no it should not be lowered. Children are "growing up" faster but are still so immature. Submitted by Amber C. on Thu, 10/30/2008 - 02:10
I absolutely do not think the drinking age should be lowered. I am 24 and a mother of 2 boys. Yes i do agree that when we are 18 we get to vote and smoke cigarettes but alcohol is more serious. Many people are not very responsible when it comes to alcohol. I think if we lower the drinking age that there will be more alcoholics and more drunk drivers. I dont think its wise to lower the drinking age. Submitted by Edgars M. on Wed, 10/29/2008 - 16:18
18 is fine.In my country you can buy tabaco and booze from age 18. Submitted by Em M. on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 02:53
This is a very conflicting issue for me. I am over 21 and did drink when I was younger. Not the hard alcohol but minimal alcohol BUT ONLY at home. I work on amilitary base and have seen the effects of drinking and driving of people who are over the age of 21 not preety and VERY expensive. We already have underage kids getting DUI"s lowering the age isn't going to change that. It will make things worse. Uping the driving age would help but not much. Kids will still find ways to do what they are not allowed to do. The drinking at 16 works overseas in Europe but then again think about how close the pubs are to their homes and they have public transportation 24/7. Most places in the U.S. don't. Don't lower it. It will only make things worse. Submitted by Nichole N. on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 01:48
If it was at all possible I'd say that 18yr. olds serving our country should be aloud to drink, but im conflicted when it comes to other 18 yr. olds. I dont feel I was ready to drink resposibly at 21. But I do not think its fair to tell some 1 they can fight and die for our country but not B able to drink a beer. But u also have to take in consideration they'll find it anyway all we'd B doing by legalizing it, would be making it easier. "IF" it were passed, they should only B-able to purchase beer NO hard alcohol. Submitted by Priscilla S. on Sun, 10/26/2008 - 03:26
Most definately, I feel if you're old enough to go to war and die for our country, then you should be able to drink. I mean a lot of 18 yr olds find a way to buy alcohol already, so either make it legal or they will just find a way. I mean come on people, age is nothing but a number, and a lot of individuals over 21 still act like adolescents, so I feel that 18 is the average age to allow it. Of course, everyone is going to have their different opinions on this subject and it's ok, we are all entitled, but let's not look down on them, and talk trash about their opinion ok. I've seen it done before. At 21 you get the younger ones getting their hands on liquor, when dropped to 18, you had even younger ones getting it, so was brought back up to 21 again. No, still don't see it's a good idea, especially with the new laws. Doesn't take much to end up losing your license forever, and that's a long time. Don't rush your life along. Loading People... |
