Save our Planet - Earth Hour Pledge March 31st

13 Pledges
  • Start Date:
    3-28-2008
  • Last Pledge:
    6-29-2008

Issue:

It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?

The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.

Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year

Belief:

On 28 March 2008, show your support for Earth hour - and turn off your lights at 8pm. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships–Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco.

Earth Day is energy day everyday day! If you want to save money at least encourage it, it could help you pay your bills! I'm already enjoying my reusable 99 cent bag from WalGreen's and I take it to grocery stores whenever I need to! The more light, stereos, nintendo, computers, cell phones and tv you use the more it adds up!!!!

Forgot to say good one Sydney for a great initiative and to get so many other cities involved for only the second year of Earth Hour. Hopefully more cities will join us next year.

I have heard that the technology is available for making cars more green friendly, but money is needed to turn that into a reality. Someone who won't be making a buck out of green energy must be behind this stalling, otherwise if money were to be made it would be full steam ahead.

One thing I've thought about, with oil prices so high, are we missing a really good opportunity to make the case for renewable fuels and energy sources that cause far less pollution? What do other people think? One thing I saw on the news was that truckers could use vegetable oil. Vegetable oil is completely renewable, it's cheaper than crude oil - a lot cheaper and existing trucks can use it by making only a minor adjustment to their engines. It seems to me a win-win solution for both truckers who are being stuck with fuel prices that are putting them out of business and the environment because it uses recycled vegetable oil and because it's organic fuel, the emmissions are environmental friendly as well. They don't turn into permanent smog. But what is stopping the transition? The government because they can't charge taxes! We need cleaner and renewable fuels. We have one part of the solution, not the best solution but a step in the right direction. Is there something I'm missing, it would seem to me it solves two problems at once?

Now I understand why ice age happened.
