Forum Discussion for Sail Around the world with Zac Sunderland

Best wishes and thanks for letting us share the dream if only vicariously.

Zac, I'm very impressed with your courage and drive to do such! Have you been sailing for a long time?
As my family of 7 children were raised most of our young lives on sailboats. Which my brother Steve Pettengill, one of 4 brothers took it to the max with 1st starting out doing offshore races on Lake Michigan, with many "No Shows" of his crew he began Solo Racing by default. Then several Trans-Atlantic's, broke a record from Boston to San Fransico, Bermuda One-Two's, etc... then participated in the BOC in 1995, taking a 2nd place to the French, he was the 1st American to ever take a place in the Solo Race Around Alone! The race was the reverse of your route, yet it started in September and ended in April '95 (you would have been only 3 years old at the time! Race started in Charleston, SC, to Cape Hope S. Africa, then to Sydney Australia, then on to Punta Del Este Uruguay South America and returned into Charleston, SC. It was such a joy to see him arrive back safe! Yet he was in his early 40's at the time! I can't imagine doing it at 16... well yes... but for your Mom & Dad must be nervous yet proud of you!! I say you must par-take in your passions in life! I wish you well!

It's impressive for a someone so young to have a vision of this magnitude and the guts to go for it. This inspires me to encourage things of greatness and personal vision to my son.

Live your Dream, Zac. Don't listen to the critics.
They'll wonder what happened to their dream 60 years from now, you won't.
