Issue:

Foods heated in a microwave oven using plastic containers release dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. This is especially applies to foods that contain fat. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer.

Belief:

Using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or cermic containers for heating food is much safer and healthier as it does not produce the dioxin

I pledge to...

not use plastic when heating foods in a microwave oven

It is not the Dioxin that you need to be concerned with but bisphenol A.

Yes, it is released into the food, but not enough to hurt you...... I did a report on microwaves and I came across this, and almost every site said it is not enough to hurt you, even if every meal you eat was in plastic from a microwave.

The world is about making everything easy and people don't care about the actions they take today. you like popping those plastic containers in the microwave making clean-up easy, I like living life to the fullest and taking any precaution to make my life longer not easier. I grew up the old fashion way not the way people live today, I was always taught that lazy people will not make in the end of days, but hard workers and poeple who wash thier dishes, people who do it without the easy ways of life, live longer and will survive in the end a whole lot better than thsoe who chose to let conviencees of the world control thier lives.  But this is just one persons opinion, what do I know right???

honestly im not too worried about the problem until the fda decides it gonna kill me until then keep the hot pockets coming

Is there any plastic container that are ok to use? Brand name?

I don't think I will stop buying frozen dinners in plastic containers.

So what about saran wrap? Is this cancer causing?

Just an update to you all... I am glad I switched from plastic to pyrex. I feel better because I am reusing a product that is safe for my family and I!

I don't want to give up the convenience of popping those chinese food containers into the microwave. I can cook and eat with them and not have to clean a dish (yea, I'm a lazy eater)

Agreed. I love any opportunity not to have to wash dishes.

If it is plastic and says microwave safe it is good enough for me.......I am not going to live my life being scared of everything. One day somthing is good for you the next it could kill you then another report comes out and says it's safe again....it's enough to drive you nuts....the bottom line is do what you feel is right for you.....life is like a game of craps you got to take your chances.

Mechanism of microwave oven is to transfer energy to water molecules which then heats up other components of food. Theoretically microwaves should not cause release of toxic chemicals from plastic, but higher temperature and repeatedly heat of a plastic container may decompose certain kind of chemicals in plastic, which is harmful to human body. Cooked food containing cheese or other oily components may dissolve small amount of molecules from plastic if keeping in a plastic container for a long time.

I would only use plastic container for uncooked vegetables and salad, but not for hot or oily food.

I am using tuperware, but don't use plastic wrap. I figure for it to look like it does when finished, something can't be right.

I am not taking any chances. I switched to using pyrex.

How about buying ceramic cups or dishes made in countries that don't screen for lead contamination? Lead was used in pottery and its glazing in this country until recently, and leached into the food stored in it. Lead exposure causes neurological disorders, reproductive disorders, and more. See http://extoxnet.orst.edu/faqs/foodcon/le... for more info.

That could work, but I guess we should also ask for scientists for that. Microwaving is a very popular cooking method and many people will tend to ignore the warnings regarding plastic containers.

I don't think there is anything we do now in excess that causes some ailment. It has always been that way. We just are catching up with grants and technology that allows us to find out this information.

I will continue to use plastic for the convenience until someone tells me where I can get small glass containers that will keep food as fresh as plastic.

it's going to be a gray area. when small details of test, and resalts presentation can make big difference.
