Opus
the Penguin,
who has entertained us comics readers for nearly 30 years,
is headed for that great comic strip in the sky.  Cartoonist Berkeley Breathed announced that he is giving up his Sunday comic strip Opus to focus on children's books instead.

Breathed says that he's not usually sentimental about his characters, but he found himself "unrealistically emotional" about drawing the final strip, taking pains to make sure the penguin's last pose was perfect.  "As I drew him finally at the very end, I knew that that was the end — [Opus'] childhood was gone. ... It took me a few minutes. I had to pull myself back together again and face the fire."

First, join me in saying thank you for introducing us to Opus and his friends in Bloom County.

Second, perhaps we can persuade Berkeley into finally doing that independent Opus movie.

Forum Discussion for Farewell to Opus the Penguin

I will never again be able to read "Goodnight Moon" to my daughter (or have her read it to me) without seeing Opus on the final page. I feel like I have lost an old friend. It is a sad commentary on how full of rancor our political discourse has become when the writer of a much loved strip feels he must hang it up rather than have his MUCH loved character become nothing more than a ranting, screaming part of what is wrong. Can't we just agree to disagree, put the personal B/S behind us. and do what is best for the country? Maybe then that "world just ahead brimming with kindness, grace, and ubiquitous bow ties" will become reality, and BB can wake Opus from his nap.

How can you do this to me, I love OPUS I even have an OPUS stuffed toy on my bedside table. One of the greatest comic characters of all time.
I am so saaaaaaaad

Dear Opus and Berkely, we have lived in the best of times and the worst of times. Thanks for helping us get thruogh the very worst. You have helped beyond measure. With great sadness we are:

Thank you for all the years of Bloom County and particularly for Opus. I will miss him more than I would miss some family members. Good luck.

I will greatly miss Opus and feel I have had a death in my life. Have followed him since his beginning and felt lost when you stopped him in the 90"s. Thankyou for your talent and humor.Sweet dreams Opus. Nicky D.

Opus became like a little black and white version of me through the years. My nose isn't quite as big, but my neurosis surely are. Newspapers are changing, comics are changing (by the by, one of my biggest issues is hating change...)and now, Opus is gone. I am truly sad that I won't be seeing him anymore-I cried real tears when I realized what was to come. Opus, my old friend, I will miss you deeply. I'm glad you're at peace. Mr. Breathed, thank you for many years of small joys. I wish you the very best in the future.

The Opus movie is a great idea! I've read and re-reread every book and cartoon on Opus & Bloom County for years. I don't know how I'll get by without them.

Good bye Opus. You've been like a part of our family.
Love you
JR, David, & Paul

During your BloomCounty years, we picked up a stray cat. He was black with white feet and we named him Opus (on St. Patrick's Day, he was O'Puss). He's been gone now for about 13 years but always remembered as a great cat! And your Opus will always be remembered as a great, neurotic at times psychotic, penguin! Kathy

52 years old? I cried! Opus lives! Good luck,B.B.

Been following Bloom County since the 80's - can't believe Opus and the gang are gone. Sunday's won't be the same...dub

Thanks for an excellent satire - I hate to see it end.

Wow, I checked out the last panel at work today and cried like a baby! Opus, you will be missed. SW in Iowa

Thank you Mr. Breathed for the most delightful and enjoyable cartoon of all time. I loved the ending! Opus is finally in a place where he can find true peace. I wish all of us could find some of that as well. Sundays will not be the same without my Opus fix. I'll have to find a way to get through it. Good luck to you and your family for the future and please give a thought to bringing Opus to the big screen so everyone can share your biting humor once more. Your fan always, Roy Sommer

Submittedby Kathy B. Never has a character in a strip meant as much to me as Opus. How can he leave us?

I worked on a project at Threshold where you had been
involved with a possible Opus movie. The concept
drawings were amazing. I hope you find a better fit
to get the movie made. What am I going to do without
my sunday wackiness?

Thanks for all the years of opus and the gang in Bloom County. Something good will be missing now so I guess I'll have to check out what's new over on "Nancy" Ack!
Oh by the way the movie idea sounds like a winner. Please!!!!

MR BREATHED, I FOLLOWED BLOOM COUNTY ,AND OPUS ,FROM THEIR BEGINING TO THEIR ENDINGS .THEY WERE A PART OF MY LIFE ,AND ENJOYMENT. I CERTAINLY WILL MISS THAT LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE GUY. Great ending to one of the best comic strips. A movie would be a good way to immortalize this character for future generations

A friend of mine at work and I started reading your cartoons back in the early 80's....we have been fans ever since and will very much miss Opus. I was hoping he would go back to his roots in Antarctica and not die. Please make a movie. Linda , Ohio

Dear Opus...you have been my favorite comic strip character since 7/25/?? when you and your friends sat at "The Men's Rouch" and commented about women at the computer.A lady came along and encouraged you all to "take a good hard look at the very thing that brings meaning to life". I will have that comic strip on my refrigerator forever! You are the best and I will miss you and your friends. Come to the BIG SCREEN and we all will come see you!
Kathy, Texas

Goodnight Old Friend. OPUS you have been a part of my life like no other comic strip characture. I have watched you grow for so long. You have brought joy to so many. Watching you leave reminds me of my TOBY last January. OPUS my friend, you are off to better places. Dreamland is upon you and the dreams are so brilliant. Stay the course and dream on for dreams are all any of us truly have forever. Mr. Breathed, please bring our friend to the BIG SCREEN. I can promise you this, OPUS on the BIG SCREEN will not be a disapointment.

So sad. I will really miss this intelligent, funny, and topical character/hero. Come back some day.

Thank you for wings that work..You and yours are always welcome at My Hearth..Safe Journey, Now & Forever

Goodnight Dear Opus, you will forever live in our memories. I will make a donation to the SPCA, of which I am a volunteer, in your beloved name. Thank you for many years of pleasure in the comics.

Judy from Monterey CA.

Thank-you for all the wonderful stories that you lovingly shared with the rest of the world. Opus, Steve (and the insecurities closet, too!) all the rest of the wonderful characters will be sorely missed. Another movie tying up all the lose ends to all the not quite finished stories would be great! Please consider that option.
Have a wonderful R & R!!
